I knew it would be a long; tough week, judging two pageants and I was mentally prepared for that...what I was not prepared for, was the amazing performances from both the mature, experienced contestants and the outstanding efforts by the young (21,22,23 and 24 year old)contestants, during the pageants. To see performers, that I either knew or watched over the last 20 years ago, grace the stage with truly creative, high energy and entertaining talents was a pure pleasure to behold. To see and hear the enthusiasm of the youngest of the young contestants, for the art form, was a pure joy to absorb. From now on,whenever I doubt the younger generations dedication to drag, I'll always be reminded of what I observed this past week, in Dallas. This art form is far from dying and will be in good hands, with the next generation of young talented performers.
Now to address a few points raised on this board about the pageants ( I CAST NO ASPERGIONS )...both Ms.Classic and Ms. Gay USofA. Yes, I acknowledge, they'll always be differences of opinions as to who should have won...that's one of the unique features of drag pageantry, everyone loves to voice their opinion and I respect that. I do take offense when I see or hear comments of rigged or slanted toward a particular contestant. Please remember, Jerry Bird, insures there are seven judges on the panel, from all walks of life, diverse backgrounds and involvement, in the art form. This in itself, negates any preconceived notion of loading the judges panel (for any one contestant)...this can be attested too, by looking at the differences of opinion, on the judges score sheets. I myself, might not agree with another judges scoring...BUT I defend their right to express that opinion, with their score. Please consider my thoughts, before condemning or ridiculing anyone.
Last, but far from least....I want to say how wonderful it was this last week, to renew old friendships and make so many new ones. I will not name anyone, for fear of being forgetful and/or remiss( Being older has its privileges....
Congratulations to both Whitney and Dominique on a job well done. To all the other contestants, I say...Thank You for your hard efforts. It was an honor to meet each and everyone one of you, as you applied for the position of title holder. Thanks, Jerry , for affording me the opportunity to meet all these talented individuals close up and personal. They are all a credit to the art form. I trust everyone has a safe return to their homes.
Hugs
