Posted 22 October 2009 - 08:21 PM
So without further ado, we give you The 10 Richest Drag Queens in the World.
1. Frank Marino. Estimated Net Worth: $12.5 million.
His own show? Check. Longest performing entertainer in Vegas? Check. Star on Las Vegas Walk of Fame? Check. Bestselling author? Check. Tv / movie actor? Check. Contract signed with the Riviera? BIG CHECK.
Skeptic casino owners first booked the show for only a three-month run but with 20-year-old, Frank Marino’s unbridled determination; this was definitely the start of something big. Today, Marino holds the title of Las Vegas’ longest running headliner. La Cage is an energetic show featuring superstar female impersonators recreating uncanny likenesses of stars that range from Judy Garland to Britney Spears and
Diana Ross to J. Lo. Meanwhile, in his role as the show’s emcee and star, Marino changes costumes between every act – bringing an international whirlwind of couture to the stage with each bravura entrance. Marino always knew he would become a star, even as a small child, growing up in New York. What he didn’t realize was that he’d have to be dressed up in glittering Bob Mackie gowns and strapped into towering Manolo Blahnik stilettos to do so. And that’s before he gets into the wigs and jewels! "The ladder of success was even harder to climb wearing high heels!" Marino wittily quips.
Never at a loss for words, Marino is an accomplished author, news commentator, columnist, spokesperson, and America’s favorite male actress. His first book, His Majesty, the Queen, was an immediate bestseller and Marino’s latest project, the film Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, was his big screen debut, where he can be seen co-starring alongside Sandra Bullock.
Even more dear to his heart, is that, in 2006, the Mayor of Las Vegas proclaimed February 1st to be "Frank Marino Day." Now the name Frank Marino is forever immortalized with a star along the Las Vegas Walk of Fame, he has a key to the city, and a street bearing his name where he can drive his very own custom-painted love bug provided by Eric at Findlay Volkswagen.
Frank represents the pinnacle of what most of us can dream of achieving in this industry. It’s no accident that the expression is show "business," because Marino is definitely a savvy businessperson having recently signed a 10-year, multi-million dollar contract. In other words, Marino will extend his reign as the undisputed "Queen of the Strip" for at least another decade. It is said that when tourists visit Las Vegas, there are three things they come for; gambling, a trip to Hoover Dam, and a chance to see Frank Marino performing in all of his glory in the award-winning La Cage at the Riviera.
It's gonna be hard to dethrone this one girls.
2. ChiChi LaRue. Estimated Net Worth: $7.7 million.
Some things seem to be recession proof. Demand for air. Demand for water. Demand for . In fact, of all the entertainers on this year's list that were on last year's list too, ChiChi's net worth is the only one that has risen. ChiChi's videos appeal not only to gay clientele, but also the straight / bi community as well.
LaRue worked at Catalina during the initial revelation of the AIDS crisis, in which many of the producers and directors in the gay industry were falling ill or dying. This created an opportunity for LaRue to persuade Catalina management to allow him to direct full-length videos.
LaRue has directed hundreds of gay films since 1988. In 2003, he began to direct straight for Vivid Video, to which he became a favorite among female stars, particularly Jenna Jameson. For some time, LaRue divided his attention between Vivid Video and his own Rascal Video for Channel 1 Releasing.
In 2006, LaRue announced he would no longer produce films for Vivid Video because they were featuring actors and actresses having sex without condoms.
In August 2008, he directed the controversial bisexual film titled Shifting Gears. LaRue coined the term Straight-for-pay (a play on word for Gay-for-pay), to reference performer Blake Riley's first encounter with a woman, Shy Love, and liking it.
LaRue and partner Channel 1 Releasing opened their first company store, Chi Chi LaRue's, in West Hollywood in 2009. The upscale-styled boutique offers the entire Channel 1 catalog of more than 2,000 titles and products. The store's offerings also include DVDs, novelties, lubricants, condoms, apparel, cards, photo books and calendars. An exclusive arrangement has also been made with One Condoms to provide all the protective barrier products for the store.
3. RuPaul. Estimated Net Worth: $6.7 million.
Her hit show, 'RuPaul's Drag Race' was a veritable hit on Logo. If you're one one of the few out there that haven't seen the show, RuPaul plays host, mentor and inspiration for this series, which details RuPaul's search for "America's next drag superstar." The show was greenlit in May 2008, according to a press release by MTV Networks. During Summer 2009, TIMM - a gay television channel from Germany - aired the first season every Friday night. The show was also first aired on E4, a UK entertainment channel, in September 2009, with the first episode airing on Wednesday 9 September 2009 at 11:00pm. The first season was marked as the most successful launch for the three-year-old Logo network. Traffic to the show's web site broke records. A second season has been ordered and will air in early 2010. Casting began in May of this year.
4. Dame Edna Everage. Estimated Net Worth: $4.1 million. [/b]
A little Q&A from with the Dame
Q: You live such a fabulous life - how do you keep up?
A: I'm very lucky being a Megastar. Fondly enough, when children are born, generally there is a father pacing around chain smoking and the nurse would come in with a little bundle. She'd say 'It's a boy' or "It's a girl.' When I was born my mother was lying there panting away in bed and in came the matron with a little bundle and it was a lovely child, beautifully formed with purple hair. My mother said, "What is it? What is it?" And the nurse said, "It's a Megastar!" That's the first known use of the word in the language. Now, I've been lucky in my life. I began as an ordinary housewife in Australia. Not many people realize I'm Australian, but I am. I'm honored that your president said I can call myself an "honorary American as far as I'm concerned, Edna," he said. In the Oval office too, with all it’s memories. Well, I'm very rich, silly for me to pretend that I'm not extremely rich. Would I be wearing these costly jewels for just a silly old television show if I wasn't absurdly wealthy? But it hasn't spoiled me. That's what people like about me. I'm hands-on, I'm cutting-edge. I'm in-your-face. I'm the sort of person that even a plain badly dressed woman could identify with and that's saying a lot.
5. Miss Understood. Estimated Net Worth: $3.7 million. [/b]
Dear Miss Understood,
We don't UNDERSTAND how your net worth fell but your ranking shot up from #7 last year. But we do understand that you have had one helluva career. Your film and television appearances include The Brenda and Glennda Show, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, HBO's Dragtime, TLC's Faking It, Wigstock, The Movie, Project Runway, and Sex and the City. We know you founded arguably the most successful drag booking agency on the planet. You have produced prominent events for George Stephanopoulos's bachelor party, Blaine Trump's Valentines Day dinner, Barbra Streisand's Farewell Concert VIP dinner, the Hugo Boss Christmas party; and New York Magazine's 30th anniversary, amongst others. Will you be offering a recession-discount anytime soon?
6. Shangay Lily. Estimated Net Worth: $3.1 million. [/b]
Miss Shangay Lily isn't so famous on this side of the pond; however, she is best known for being one of Spain's most popular drag queens. He is also a writer, actor and director.
Becoming the first openly gay personality on national television, where he promoted his anti-heteronormative politics during an increasingly conservative era under the Partido Popular, he came under attacks that hampered his ascent. But, although he was viewed more and more as an alternative culture or underground performer, he worked on some of the most important primetime shows and soon became a mainstream household name.
He then turned to literature and confirmed his maverick position by publishing four books with some of Spain's major publishing houses, an unheard-of feat for a drag queen. His works include the non-fiction books Hombres... y otros animales de compañia ("Men and other pets") and Mari, ¿me pasas el poppers? ("Sis', could you pass me the poppers?") and the novels Escuela de glamour ("Glamour school") and Machistófeles ("Machistophele"). His fifth book is on its way: a new novel about his years in Queer New York and the Crystal Meth crisis.
His work in television continued with his own television show, an indie talk show about literature and art called Shangay Café, that run for four seasons in a small TV network; he also worked in the theatre. He came to TV prominence once again by taking part in a very popularreality television show in Spain: "La Granja de los famosos".
In 2005 he directed his first feature film, Santa Miguel de Molina, a portrait of the rise and decadence of the Spanish homosexual community, the corruption of some gay lobby groups, and the stigmatization of queers by the conservative urban gay elite. It was premiered in Spain's 2005 LesGaiCineMad (Madrid's Lesbian and Gay film festival).
In 2006 he started his vlog to cover a different point of view with irony, humour and an assortment of characters that reflect the gay community in a pecliar news report called "Teledivario: news from the other side of the street" .
7. The Lady Bunny. Estimated Net Worth: $1.8 million. [/b]
He began his career alongside Larry Tee and RuPaul as a fixture on the Atlanta, Georgia gay scene. She appeared in a variety of low budget films with them.
Her style of drag performance usually involves lip-synching to a compilation of karaoke versions of popular songs over which she has recorded her own vocals singing parodies of the original lyrics. The new lyrics are usually sexually explicit, or revolve around food, or both. For instance, her parody of the Gwen Stefani song Hollaback Girl has the lyric "I a banana/a banana in my !"
In 2005 she was a roaster on the Comedy Central roast of Pamela Anderson and released her first DVD, Rated X for X-tra Retarded.

This is the 2nd queen on our list that has been given a key to the Entertainment Capital of the World (Frank Marino being the other).
Larry's done stints in acclaimed revues in Los Angeles, Atlantic City and Vegas. Longevity is something we all strive for in this industry and Larry continued in "An Evening at La Cage" for over 8 years.
Think of a talk show. She's probably been on it. Larry even made it to Oprah! Appearance in an Academy Award nominated movie? Check. ('What's Love Got To Do With It").

9. Victoria "Pork Chop" Parker. Estimated Net Worth: $1.05 million [/b]
Come and listen to a story about a queen named Pig
A rich drag queen, whose bank account is big
Didn't start that way, she worked from town to town,
And got tips and tips to make a money mound.
Cash that is, crowns of gold, booking fees.
Well the first thing you know ol Pig's a millionaire,
Drag folks said 'Pig move away from there'
Said 'Californy is the place you ought to be'
So she loaded up a jet and flew to Beverly.
Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars.
Well Rupaul said goodbye to Piggy's famous spin.
But Pig went from TV to a national pageant.
2 gowns cost Pig a pretty plenty,
But 10 grand is nothing when you're a Rich Piggy.
Pork Chop that is. Set a spell, Take your shoes off.
Y'all come back now, y'hear?. OINK! OINK!
10. Denise "The Voice" Russell. Estimated Net Worth: $750,000 [/b]
Whitney "The Voice" Houston? We know there's only One Voice ... and we're not referring to Barbra Streisand's live album from the 80s. This voice has been in demand for over 30 years. Folks have paid over $2000 to hear "The Voice" in one day. You take a look at Denise and you think you see an elegant Southern Belle but then she opens her mouth. She's irreverent, hilarious, talented and gorgeous all at the same time. A former national title holder, Denise is proud to be in a LTR and to have performed at the Grand Ole Opry.

Hot Chocolate is certainly not a millionare - I love Larry and he is a verry well respected Entertainer, but he is working the door at a 8 1/2 right now, hmmmmmm.
Porkchop worth a million? I LOVE chop, and Victor spent almost 2 weeks at my house for Sundance Film Festival when pageant came out, but I know she's not a millionare....
Who thought of all these? I mean really? - I trully would hope that as entertainers and professionals, we would look into the truth of these things before spreading this kind of stuff. Though it would be amazing to see half of these people as rich as this story says..

I don't think stating that this is "For Entertainment Purposes Only" makes that fact clear to everyone. This article has been quoted around the Internet as fact. I wish booking drag queens made millions! But seriously, it's not like this is a humorous parody like The Onion, it's just a big fat made up story.
